FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 7, 2024

Filmed last August around Los Angeles, the French New Wave inspired independent film The Truffaut Affair is about to mark another post-production milestone.

According to Director Matthew Ben Miller, he can’t wait to see the assembled footage of what is being dubbed as The Truman Show meets The Maltese Falcon for a new generation.

“I’ve seen most of the dailies, and I’ve never seen a film quite like this. It’s magical, funny, and a quirky adventure,” Miller said. “It has all the ingredients for something original that takes the indie world by storm. Our ensemble cast shines, and I can’t wait to show everyone what they’ve done.”

He added, “We’re expecting a roug-hcut of the film at the end of March, which we can’t wait to see. And we’re very excited about the collaboration with Chenxing Zhang, our editor, who attended the American Film Institute and now works with Pixar.”

The Truffaut Affair Producer Lance B. Witmer said this production was a labor of love which relied on the committed passions and craft of many individuals.

“With so much care and intent pouring into every frame of this film, I fully expect audiences to feel that now-illusive feeling that used to be synonymous with cinema,” he said. “And the images punch way above their budget ‘weight class.’ That much is clear even from dailies.”

Witmer added, “I am very excited to see this story through the last leg of its marathon to completion.”

For as much fun as shooting The Truffaut Affair was, Miller said that filming can, at times, be a bit of a battle.

“At the end of each day, you look back to see the casualties and—more importantly—whether you planted your flag on the hill you set out to conquer,” he said.

“Moviemaking can be messy. If you can imagine a thing going wrong, then there’s a good chance it did. But so much went right, as well—largely the key crew we had, and the resources they were able to bring to the table.”

Miller added, “I’ll use the old French cars as an example. We were given two old autos—one broke down halfway through the shoot. But Trevor, our production manager, had access to a trailer we could tow the car in. Without him, I don’t know what we would’ve done.”

Miller said his cast and crew not only went above and beyond in their performances and duties but that they made the long days and nights a fun and unforgettable experience.

“I’d like to especially thank our DP Dawit Adera, who never sacrificed quality. He fought to give us the best images possible, and he went above and beyond,” Miller said. “I’d also like to thank Johnny Miller, who was essential in the success of this production, as well as Producers Lance B. Witmer and Trevor Breithaupt, and screenwriter Ben Gohs for their unwavering commitment to this film. Without which we would have nothing.”

Miller is currently in LA shoring up marketing and distribution for The Truffaut Affair before departing for France in the coming weeks to put boots in the soil to prepare for he and Ben’s next film, a French road-trip romance à la Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris.

“We hope to begin production on our next film in the spring of 2025,” Miller said.
